Student Assistance Team (SAT) Procedures
Overview of SAT Procedures
-
Referral Initiation:
- A referral to the SAT Coordinator can be made by teachers, parents, or other school faculty when a student is identified as needing additional support.
-
Team Composition:
- The SAT typically includes the student’s school administrator, current teacher(s), school counselor, and other relevant professional staff (e.g., social worker, speech pathologist, school psychologist, Grade Level Interventionists).
-
Initial Meeting:
- The team meets to discuss the student’s needs, review existing data, and develop an intervention plan tailored to the student’s specific challenges. This may involve referring for additional testing/assessments and/or the development of a 504 plan.
-
Intervention Plan:
- The plan may include academic, behavioral, or social-emotional interventions. The team sets measurable goals and timelines for these interventions.
-
Documentation and Paperwork:
- Once a referral is made, relevant paperwork is sent home to be completed by the student's primary parent(s)/guardian(s). This paperwork outlines pertinent referral details, asks for additional student information, and requires written consent/acknowledgement of procedural rights/safeguards.
- Parents/guardians should allow 24-48 hours to receive this paperwork once a referral is formally made and are expected to complete and return it by the provided deadline.
-
Implementation and Monitoring:
- The intervention plan is implemented either the day of or day following the meeting, and the student’s progress is monitored regularly to ensure the appropriateness/efficacy of interventions. Adjustments to the plan are made as needed based on the student’s response to interventions or caregiver request.
-
Follow-Up Meetings:
- A SAT will meet periodically to review the student’s progress and make necessary adjustments to the intervention plan. Parents/guardians are kept informed throughout this process.
-
Outcome Determination:
- If the student shows significant improvement, the interventions may be reduced or discontinued. If additional support is needed, the SAT may refer the student for further evaluation or specialized services.
Key Points for Parents/Guardians
- Paperwork/Documentation: Expect to receive paperwork within 24-48 hours after a referral is made. It’s crucial to complete and return this paperwork by the provided deadline to ensure timely support for your child.
- Communication: Stay in contact with the SAT coordinator (K-2: Stevie Trotter; 3-5: Jesse Penland) and your child’s teacher to stay updated on your child’s progress and any changes to the intervention plan.
